After his death Chydenius was largely forgotten about and he remained in oblivion until the end of the nineteenth century when he was rediscovered by liberal historians and politicians. At the beginning of the twentieth century Chydenius became one of the national heroes and most prominent figures in Finland’s nation-building process. The statue of Chydenius, sculpted by Walter Runeberg, was unveiled in Kokkola in 1903.
